Cuốn sách vừa được trao giải Pulitzer 2023. Trích đoạn sách: 1. Thời đó, năm tháng cứ thế trôi đi trong khi bạn không tạo dáng chụp hình. Bạn không mảy may nghĩ tới chuyện chụp một bức ảnh. Máy ảnh như kẻ ngoại xâm vào đời sống thường nhật. Thật kỳ cục khi đi lại với một chiếc máy ảnh trong tay, trừ khi đó là bài tập được giao về nhà khiến cho việc chụp ảnh cũng trở nên bớt dị thường. Nếu có một chiếc máy ảnh, bạn sẽ dùng nó trong suốt những ngày học cuối, trong những buổi tiệc tùng hay khi mọi người đang thu dọn đồ đạc, áp dụng logic nhồi nhét vào phút chót cho việc ghi lại những kỷ niệm. Nếu có người cố chớp hình bạn, ngay cả khi với ý đồ ngớ ngẩn hay bột phát, bạn vẫn sẽ nhặng xị lên và lúng túng tạo dáng, bởi việc đó suy cho cùng đều dẫn đến một mục tiêu, cùng lắm chỉ được một hai lần chụp, nhiều hơn thì hơi ám ảnh. Một khoảnh khắc sẽ trôi đi, chẳng hề để ý, cho tới nhiều tháng sau, khi tráng những bức ảnh mà mình đã chụp tại một buổi xem nhạc hay bữa tiệc sinh nhật, một sự kiện thích đáng được ghi lại, bạn phát hiện ra vài bức ảnh chụp bạn bè mình đang sửa soạn để đi chơi, hay một lát cắt cuộc sống vô tư có khả năng cháy sáng cả cuộn phim. Những chuyện mà bạn đã quên bẵng đi mất. Về sau, khi nhiếp ảnh trở nên phổ biến, những bức ảnh lại chính là minh chứng cho sự tồn tại của bạn, ngày qua ngày. Chúng nối nhau tạo thành một chuỗi. Khi nhìn lại, bạn bắt đầu băn khoăn về trình tự của các sự kiện. Liệu có điều gì đã thực sự diễn ra hay không, khi vắng đi những bằng chứng ấy. 2. Con đừng sợ. Cuộc đời này đầy rẫy bất ngờ và háo hức, cứ xoay sở và tận hưởng, giống như trước đây con nói thích làm bài tập xuyên quốc gia vậy. Sau khi leo lên một quả đồi và nhìn xuống, con sẽ thấy rất đã. Đó chính là ý mà cha muốn nói. Đừng sợ việc leo lên, cũng đừng khởi sự chọn một ngọn núi cao quá. Con cần phải chinh phục những đồi nhỏ trước. Học hỏi từ đó. Dù có té nhào thì con cũng sẽ học được cách leo tốt hơn vào lần tới. Vã mồ hôi đấy, nhưng hãy tận hưởng quá trình đó. Mẹ và cha rất tự hào về con, không chỉ bởi thành tích mà bởi tích cách vui vẻ của con nữa. Cha mẹ sẽ ủng hộ mọi lựa chọn của con (phần lớn! Ha!). Con đừng buồn nếu đôi lúc cha mẹ căng thẳng quá. Chúng ta chỉ hy vọng cho con tất cả những định hướng và giúp con ra quyết định dễ dàng hơn. Có lẽ cha mẹ đã đặt quá nhiều áp lực lên con, nhưng cha mẹ hoàn toàn không chủ đích làm vậy. Hãy cứ thả lỏng và sắp xếp thời gian để giải quyết những vấn đề ưu tiên của con. 3. Một câu hỏi quan trọng là liệu con người ta sẽ yêu đời hay đôi lúc ghét bỏ bản thân và không chấp nhận được cuộc đời. Mỗi thế hệ đều có vấn đề của riêng mình. Với người trẻ, vừa sống duy tâm vừa cảm thấy bất lực là chuyện hết sức bình thường và cần thiết để xã hội vận hành. Vấn đề là cuộc sống vẫn cứ tiếp diễn, vẫn phải tiếp diễn. Mỗi thế hệ phải đối diện với vấn đề, phải tiếp tục sống và nỗ lực vượt qua cơn mộng vỡ.
